York for Children
The city of York is a beautiful place to escape with the family, to enjoy some time together with the kids and create memories to last a lifetime. In previous blogs, we’ve highlighted some of the great aspects of York that are ideal for couples. Here, we’ll be looking at the attractions and days out that are perfect for the whole family! From Vikings to chocolate, York has a diverse range of entertainment that will keep smiles on everyone’s faces. Read on to discover some of the fantastic attractions the city has to offer for families with children:
York’s Chocolate Story
Perhaps the sweetest attraction in York, the Chocolate Story is a chance for the whole family to see first hand the history of York’s most famous chocolate-making families. Learn about the history and origin of chocolate, what goes into making our favourite treat and how to taste it as an expert would. You can even get hands-on by decorating your own chocolate lollies! A fun and informative day out with the kids and ideal for a rainy day in the city.
York Castle Museum
Offering visitors a varied and excellently curated selection of artefacts that date back hundreds of years, York Castle Museum is a great day out for the whole family. You’ll have the opportunity to wander down Victorian cobbled streets and see first hand the prison cell of the notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin. They also have an exhibition that shows what life would have been like on the front line during the first World War. The museum even captures more-modern history including that of the space age and life in the sixties!
Jorvik Viking Centre
Bringing the Viking legacy to life, the Jorvik Viking Centre showcases a collection of 1,000-year-old artefacts in a newly re-imagined centre. The centre is located on a previous archaeological dig site which adds to the immersion of the experience. The time capsule ride will show visitors just what it was like to live in a Viking age city with buildings and structures recreated on the original site that they were discovered. The centre even has its own collection of Viking hosts who can guide you through the artefacts and exhibitions!
Yorkshire Museum in the centre of York has a current exhibition on dinosaurs, called Jurassic World. The whole family can journey 150 millions years back in time to discover how these gigantic reptiles changed the world. There are fossils, life-size models, interactive displays and a variety of environments to explore; your children will love spending the day here. Yorkshire Museum is located in the Museum Gardens, and on sunny days you can explore the gardens and admire the spring flowers emerging.
The Web Adventure Park
Just a short drive from our luxury accommodation with on-site parking is The Web Adventure Park. Offering a selection of entirely different areas to explore, the Web Adventure Park gives kids and adults alike a truly fun day out! The indoor play area is suitable for children of all ages with plays frames, a sports arena, foam ball cannons and loads more. Outdoors there is even more to do, with a huge sand and water play area, a climbing forest, and lots of other activities. They also have an animal zone that is home to a range of both cute and cuddly animals along with farm animals including the fabled micro pigs!
The Bird of Prey Centre
A must visit for any budding bird watchers in the family, the Bird of Prey Centre in Huby, a short drive from York, has a fantastic collection of over 80 birds including owls, hawks, vultures and even eagles. There is always something to do at the centre with a packed daily itinerary of talks, displays and the opportunity to have up close and personal experiences with the birds. They also offer one-off experiences for those who want to have a more immersive and personal experience with the birds, including hawk walks and owl experiences.
Only open throughout the summer, from 13th July to 2nd September, this attraction is home to the UK’s largest maze, along with many other activities. The maze is truly something to behold as it is designed in a different theme each year. Most recently, the maze celebrated the 25th anniversary of Jurassic Park with a huge dinosaur shape maze. With various other attractions such as pig racing, water catapults and a maze of illusions, you’ll get lost in your time here and have some excellent stories to share!
