What’s on in Harrogate and York? – Spring/Summer 2016

There’s always plenty going on in Harrogate and York – as two major regional hubs, they are great places to stop by for exciting events, exhibitions or just a lovely weekend break.

This spring and summer are packed with events in the sunshine! Here’s a rundown of just some of the things happening over the coming months.. There’s sure to be something here for all tastes.

Harrogate

21 – 24 Apr – Harrogate Spring Flower Show – This massive floral festival features stunning displays, top shopping and a full programme of demonstrations. Which? rated this Britain’s top gardening event so green-thumbed enthusiasts should not miss out! At the Great Yorkshire Showground.

1 Jun – 31 Jul – Harrogate Music Festival – A fantastic two months of musical performances all over Harrogate. Anyone with an interest in jazz, chamber, classical, or popular music should find time to attend at least a few events. The Festival celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year, so expect something extra special! Various venues.

12 – 14 Jul – Great Yorkshire Show – The highlight of the Yorkshire agricultural calendar, the 158th GYS promises terrific shows, fresh food, and entertainment and activities for children and adults. Everyone should visit at least once! At the Great Yorkshire Showground.

24 Sept – Yorkshire Warrior – One of the toughest obstacle courses you’ll ever enter, Yorkshire Warrior will push 5,000 people to their physical limits! Spectators are also welcome. At Ripley Castle.

York

Until 19 Jun – Flying Scotsman Season – Find out all about the history of one of the most famous locomotives in the world. For all the family at National Railway Museum.

15 – 17, 23 – 24 Apr – York Open Studios – This is a unique chance to meet some of the most talented artists from York and beyond and listen to them speak about their work. Various city centre locations.

23 – 24 Apr – The Festival of Vintage – A celebration of vintage music, fashion and life in the 1930s to 1960s. Take a step back in time! At York Racecourse.

15 – 31 Jul – The Great Yorkshire Fringe – Laugh out loud at this competitive comedy festival, which has enjoyed such success in the past years that it’s been extended by a week. Who will be crowned the champion? Venues on Parliament Street.

Tour de Yorkshire 

29 Apr – 1 May – Tour de Yorkshire – The North’s favourite cycle race is back for a third year, as racers ride 185km (115 miles) across God’s own country, including through Ripley and Knaresborough (near Harrogate) and skirting York to the south. Follow all the action this weekend!
