The Royal Wedding Vs FA Cup Final
Saturday, May 19th, is a big day for the UK, with two major events taking place; the Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester United. It is likely the whole country will be glued to their TVs all afternoon watching the events, and celebrating with drinks, music and food. If you are staying at our serviced apartments, York or Harrogate, we have put together where you can join in the celebrations in the area.
Royal Wedding Events
Having the wedding on a Saturday is actually a break from tradition for the Royal Family, and though it means no extra day off work like Kate and Wills wedding, pubs are expected to stay open later. The service is taking place at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle at 12pm, ending at 1pm. Then the newlyweds will leave the castle by carriage, taking a two-mile procession around Windsor to see well-wishers.
Yates York is hosting a Royal Wedding Party on May 19th from 9am to long into the night! There will be two for one special cocktails – the Ginger Mojito or Markle Martini, and a DJ playing all your favourite tunes. There will be games and giveaways throughout the day too.
Vale of York Academy, York
A family-friendly celebration of the royal wedding and FA cup final will be taking place at the Vale of York Academy from 10.30am to 2.30pm. There will be a wedding cake ‘Bake Off’, a five-a-side football tournament, bouncy castle, BBQ, face painting, music and a chance to watch the Royal Wedding on a big screen! Admission is free, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
Carlton Towers, Carlton
Carlton Towers, a country house and estate just 39 minutes-drive from The Lawrance in York, are hosting a Royal Wedding Garden Party, from 10.30am to sunset on the 19th May. The street party come garden party will be full of British tradition, with a hog roast, live music, face painting, garden games, bouncy castle and gin, ales, Pimms and more available at the bar. Tickets are £10pp in advance or £12pp on the gate, with under 3’s free.
The Knox, Harrogate
The Knox, a cosy country pub in Harrogate, is inviting guests to join in their celebration of the royal wedding, from 12pm to 5pm on Saturday 19th May. The event is to be broadcast live on the big screen, and Pimms, cocktails, cask ales and bubbly will be served. The Knox is also suggesting a fancy dress code – if you want – as it is the wedding of the year!

FA Cup Final
There was some excitement at the Royal Wedding falling on the same day as the FA Cup Final, as best man Prince William is president of the Football Association. However, with kick-off at 5.15 at Wembley Stadium, he could have time to attend! The match will be shown live on BBC One and BT Sport.
