3 Reasons (with some chasers) Yorkshire is such a tonic for Gin lovers

Recent national polls show that the amount of gin enjoyed in Yorkshire is second only to London and the drink’s popularity up North has inspired a bevy of regional small batch producers and a hearty measure of local gin festivals.

Plus, with Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day just around the corner here are a few reasons why Harrogate and York are the North’s favourite des-gin-ations.

Why not travel in time to Harrogate?

Like gin, Harrogate has a long remedial history. In the late 16th Century the first mineral well was discovered in Harrogate, whose waters were believed to possess the same healing qualities as spa water. As for gin, the drink has been valued for its medicinal properties since the Middle Ages.

Bidding a hasty return to the Digital Age, however, there are some fine drinking establishments to drop into during your stay in Harrogate.

10 Devonshire Place is a majestic bar set in an historic Coaching Inn overlooking the Stray. They pride themselves on serving delicious food and equally delectable drink: their well-stocked bar houses over 120 types of gin.

Another popular watering hole is Spirit of Harrogate on Montpellier Parade. Run by the folk responsible for the local Slingsby Gin, Spirit of Harrogate runs tasting sessions and the venue can be hired for private events, making it a great option for a celebration with a difference, perhaps preceded by a trip to the town’s historic Turkish Baths and pre-drinks in your luxurious Lawrance apartment in Harrogate.

Or get the taste of York

York reputedly boasts 365 pubs and bars – one for every day of the year. The city has long been a popular destination for the more discernible hen parties wishing to stir some culture into their weekend breaks.

This month, York is hosting the Gin Festival. Starting out in Leeds five years ago – the festival now tours across the country and will be at the York Barbican on the 23rd and 24th February. Every festival weekend is curated to pay special attention the region it’s visiting. To get you in the mood, take a look at their five recommended Yorkshire gins.

If you’re after something a bit lower in key, why not head to the gin room in Sutler’s – a stone’s throw from the Shambles – where you can rest your cobble-hardened toes and take the charming advice of the friendly staff to sample some of their numerous gins.

During your stay in Yorkshire look out for some of the local small batch brands behind the bar including Masons which is hand crafted at the Masons Yorkshire Gin Distillery in Bedale and Whittakers which originates from Dacre in picturesque Nidderdale.
